Rising German Metalcore Band SETYØURSAILS Release New Single and Details for Second Album “Bad Blood”

Fasten your seatbelts, as German modern metalcore upstarts SETYØURSAILS aren’t slowing down in 2024. After taking over stages at festivals like Summer Breeze and Full Force in 2023, the quartet is now set to drop their second studio album, Bad Blood, scheduled for release on April 12, 2024 via Napalm Records.

Jumping right into the pit with hard-hitting first single “Bad Blood”, SETYØURSAILS teams up with Zebrahead vocalist Adrian Estrella and showcases no mercy as modern electronic melodies and energetic screams build up to a top-notch breakdown. This new single and official music video follows the Cologne-based outfit’s recent announcement of their German co-headline tour alongside Rising Insane, kicking off in Leipzig, Germany on April 12. Tickets are on sale now, so get them while they last and experience the band’s unlimited live energy!

Vocalist Jules Mitch on Bad Blood:

This song is a personal reckoning that was more than easy for me to write. It reminds me that I’m stronger and more mature than my haters will ever be. You often get motivation from people who want to see you down. I hope they keep it up, I’m not done yet.

Adrian Estrella of Zebrahead adds:

‘Bad Blood’! The punch in the face you need when taken advantage of, this song has brutally beautiful verses with melodic, truthful choruses. I’m very happy to be a part of this masterpiece with SETYØURSAILS!

Watch the Official Music Video for “Bad Blood”:

After successfully dropping their acclaimed debut album, Nightfall, in 2022, German Metal Hammer dubbed SETYØURSAILS as one of the scene’s best newcomers. The unit, composed of Jules Mitch, André Alves, Henrik Kellershohn and Nicolai Hoch, followed with extensive touring with Annisokay, Emil Bulls, Cypecore and Lord Of The Lost. On this intense new offering, SETYØURSAILS unleashes a mixture of highly infectious tracks and relentless, electrifying atmospheres.

Jules Mitch says about Bad Blood:

With our new album Bad Blood, we are ushering in a new era in our band’s history. This album is louder, more aggressive and more honest than anything we’ve ever done before. It is another step towards self-discovery and healing. It covers various topics such as betrayal, mental health, but also sex and a lot of complex emotions. Topics we have never addressed before. We are ready for a change, for a new chapter. A new opportunity for further development.

Pre-Order “Bad Blood” HERE

Bad Blood kicks off with the charged-up banger “Bad Blood”, followed by the former standalone single “Best Of Me”, which was released alongside an official music video. The track represents the new chapter of the unit, pushing the boundaries of different genres while vocalist Jules Mitch skillfully unites both beautifully melodic and fiercely heavy passages. Created to play on repeat, the highly-infectious song “Bad Company” is dominated by smashing electronic beats combined with brutally melodic guitar lines and highlighted by a ground shaking breakdown. With tracks like “Lately” and “Heart Attack”, SETYØURSAILS lyrically shares their softer side by addressing personal conflicts and mental health concerns, and wraps the songs in a strikingly melodic atmosphere.

Prepare for a sonic onslaught as these German metalcore sensations gear up to unleash their second studio album, Bad Blood – promising a fierce and intense masterclass in modern metalcore.

KELEVRA’s New Video “The Distance” Puts A Progressive Spin On Hateful Endings

Regina, Canada’s Kelevra has made a name for themselves in the national scene with their distinct and unique approach to metal, accompanied by a high-intensity live show. Recently they have taken time away from performing live to step back into the studio and create their third album “Oneiric”, which will be released in March 2024. The first single is the gripping “The Distance” – a story of hateful endings and love lost.

The band comments:

The bpm and varied technique required to pull this one off really demands the band be tight and ready, and it has become a standout track showcasing every band member firing on all cylinders. The nimble string gymnastics, push and pull feel in the rhythm section, and stops and starts on a dime really come together to show clever musicianship. The lyrics, vocals, and music interplay with an urgency that drives home the message of the track in a tight and cohesive unit.

For Kelevra, the writing process is different from song to song, but usually begins with a single guitar riff. With the luxuries of technology and home recording studios, it is also common for songs to be formed in their entirety by one or two of the members and then presented to the band. Each member of the band has considerable experience in other bands as well, so talent and professionalism run deep in this group.

As a band, they have always found music as a way to reflect and share their thoughts and opinions, whether it be directly or metaphorically. With tons of new material, together with an ever-evolving fast-paced, melodic, and heavy sound, Kelevra is set to take Canadian progressive metal to all-new heights in 2024. They recommended listening for fans of Chimaira, Lamb of God, and Unearth.

The ensemble featured names such as Kris Martens (Tangled Horns – Diablo Blvd.), Jason Bernard (King Hiss), Coen Janssen (Epica), Casper De Decker (Hamelin, Rānn), Servaas Steurbaut (Bizkit Park – Bulls On Parade), Jonas Wolf (Eluveitie – Illumishade), Isaac Delahaye (Epica), Jan Coudron (King Hiss, Carneia), Alex Agnew (Diablo Blvd.), Sven De Caluwé (Aborted), Jeroen Vranken (Arson), Jeroen Camerlynck (Fleddy Melculy), and Simon Duson (Carnation).

Her musical journey began as a young teenager, captivated by Axl Rose’s electrifying vocals and stage performance in the Appetite For Destruction and Use Your Illusions albums. Since then, there was only one road for her. Recently, she has showcased her talent by covering some of her favourite singers on her YouTube channel, Dani Hart Music.

Dani’s upcoming EP, ‘Slaying Bluebeard’, stands as a testament to her versatility and unwavering commitment to delivering a transformative and empowering musical journey.

American Doom Outfit FRAYLE Signs Worldwide Contract with Napalm Records

Fast-rising American doom outfit FRAYLE have officially joined forces with Napalm Records, signing a worldwide contract with the premier Austrian rock and metal empire.

Cleveland, Ohio’s FRAYLE crept onto the scene after forming in 2018, helmed by original members Sean Bilovecky (guitars) and Gwyn Strang (vocals). Since then, the band has been lauded by fans and media critics alike, merging the heaviness of occult-driven doom and blackgaze with Strang’s distinctively eerie vocal stylings. FRAYLE has since expanded into a four piece, welcoming drummer Jon Vinson and bassist Jason Knotek to the fold, allowing the band to fully realize their “lullabies over chaos” musical vision. Noted first by Revolver Magazine as a band to watch in 2023, and then again by Knotfest for the coming year, the band continues to invigorate their already buzzing sway on the scene. Following gloomy performances in Europe and the United States at festivals such as Damnation, Desertfest, Soul Crusher, Gloomnar, Post Fest and Inkcarceration, FRAYLE vows to enrapture audiences with new music in 2024.

FRAYLE says about the signing:

We are thrilled to be joining the incredible team at Napalm Records. Napalm has always been the label that artists strive to be a part of and we are honored to bring our unique blend of heavy witch gloom to their impressive roster.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to say we are extremely fortunate to be part of the Oracle Management family, and are grateful for them helping us realize our goal of signing to Napalm Records. It was Oracle’s existing relationship with Napalm that helped to seal the deal. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Sebastian Muench, Senior A&R at Napalm Records, adds:

FRAYLE have been enchanting their fans with their unique way of interpreting doom metal since 2017. Their artistic vision and past live performances have fascinated us and enticed us to work together as partners on the next step in the band’s career. I can guarantee that the new studio album will be simply amazing!

Temtris Interview (Genevieve Rodda) – 01/2024

No matter which way you slice it, Australian heavy metal band TEMTRIS had a fantastic 2023. With the success of their concept album “Khaos Divine”, and the positive reception of their first tour across Europe, we thought now would be a perfect time to check in with the band, and were lucky enough to catch up with lead singer Genevieve Rodda to ask a few questions.

First of all, we just want to say congratulations on the success of your new album. I believe we were one of the first publications to write a review for Khaos Divine, and it seems like our verdict was spot on judging by the critical consensus that has followed. Not to mention the fact that Khaos Divine is now making its way into many best album lists for 2023. How does it feel to have such a widely acclaimed release? Does it put any pressure on you for the next album?

Thank you for such kind words regarding our latest album Khaos Divine!

We have made a few best albums lists for 2023 and it is amazing.

We always hope we can improve on every album release but still bring fresh music to the table. It does get harder each album but we still enjoy the writing process.

Where did the idea come from to write a concept album like Khaos Divine? Especially one with such a dark and dystopian timeline? Even though your previous albums have often been centred around various themes, this still feels like it is new territory for the band. Was the songwriting or recording process much different this time around?

The concept of this album came together during a covid lockdown.

I talked to the band about writing a futuristic album and having a main female character that was strong and almost super hero like. We built the story from there. It actually all came together very quickly.

If we were only able to describe this album to a friend by mentioning an album that was released by another metal band, we would pick Queensrÿche’s ‘Operation Mindcrime’. And not just because of the similarity that we noticed at times with Geoff Tate’s vocals, but it has the same vibe about it and raises the bar and expectation. Would you agree with this choice?

It would be a reasonable choice in line with many other great concept albums.

Operation Mindcrime is an iconic album to be compared to.

One of my main vocal influences is Geoff Tate so it is not surprising that the vocal style is similar in some songs.

In our review we predicted that “Evolution of Hate” would become the third single for the album. However, it feels like you made the right call to release “The Lies Become the Truth” instead, given that this has become such a huge fan favourite. Do you put a lot of this song’s appeal down to the nature of the lyrics, and how difficult it has become in recent times to discern what is factual and what is not in our everyday lives?

We picked the Lies Become The Truth as our 3rd single because it is such a fan favourite of the album. When playing it live the song really goes down well with our audience. The lyrics do speak to many these days too and the chorus is powerful.

I talked to the band about writing a futuristic album and having a main female character that was strong and almost super hero like.

Genevieve Rodda

While we are addressing things that are a challenge in the world right now, how do you feel about the current state of the music industry? We heard that Spotify recently announced changes to their royalty policy. Is it fair to say that the music gig is getting even tougher these days? Especially for new bands who are just starting out?

We have been slogging it out in our industry for many years now and it definitely has not got any easier.

There are less venues to play. Selling product such as cds is not as easy since streaming has become the norm. You definitely would not get into the industry to make money.

You just recently returned from your first tour in Europe. Can you describe that experience? We understand that it has been a dream of yours for a while, so was it everything that you hoped? And did your partnership with WormHoleDeath help to make this a reality?

We did play the UK and Europe in September and it was a lot of fun. The tour I put together with my own contacts and it was so successful we are coming back in 2024 and I am currently booking shows as we speak. It was not easy to do this being so far away and having not booked shows in Europe before but it all worked out in the end.

The music scene is definitely alive and well in Europe and the response we received was nothing short of amazing.

You have once said that seeing you perform live is the ultimate way to experience your music. However, given the geographical distance between you and many of your international fanbase makes this more challenging, are there any plans to perhaps release a live CD/DVD recording in future?

You cannot beat seeing a band live and experiencing the energy and vibe that comes with the music.

We have put together live footage from our Ritual Warfare tour and we are trying to find someone who can put this together for us to release as a live DVD.

The touring didn’t stop after you got back to Australia, as you continued to travel across the country, including a gig in Perth for the first time. You also attended Lagerfest where you played alongside The Halo Effect, Lagerstein, Beyond The Black, and Devilskin, and then supporting Metal Church shortly afterwards. While being on the same lineup as high-profile bands is nothing novel for you, I’m curious how it felt to share the stage with two other female-fronted bands at Lagerfest? Is this a sign that women are becoming more prevalent in the genre? Did you have any interaction backstage?

Yes we were very lucky to be offered to play those shows when we returned to Australia.

Female Fronted bands are definitely becoming more prominent overseas and here in Australia.

The two female fronted bands at Lagerfest, Devilskin and Beyond The Black actually hit the ground running when they arrived at the venue and there was no time to chat as soundchecks and load ins take up all their time.

As for Metal Church, we are good friends with that band and we had a great time playing with them again and catching up before and after the show.

We always hope we can improve on every album release but still bring fresh music to the table.

Genevieve Rodda

With everything that happened surrounding Temtris last year, how do you plan to top it? What are the next steps for the band?

We are currently writing songs and have an idea on the next album direction.

I am also booking shows in Europe for 2024. After having such a great time we have to come back.

You have mentioned in the past that Bruce Dickinson has been a strong influence for you as a vocalist. How did it feel then to be able to play at the Cart & Horses in the UK this year, which is regarded as the birthplace of Iron Maiden?

Yes Bruce is my main influence along with Geoff Tate.

I was very excited to play the Cart’s n Horses on our tour. The venue is very cool and to tick that off our list as somewhere we have played is amazing !

Have there been any female metal performers that have influenced or inspired you in your career? Or anyone that you would love to maybe collaborate with?

I am a huge fan of Doro Pesch and have followed her since the Warlock days. I think to play a show with Doro would be amazing and it is definitely on my bucket list to do.

When did you realise you had such a powerful instrument with your voice, and that it was perfectly suited for heavy metal? Do you take any steps or precautions to protect it when you know you will be doing a lot shows?

I first learnt to play guitar at about 12 years old. I was writing my own songs and realised I could sing. I started singing lessons and my vocal teacher wanted me to do opera. I was not interested in that style and joined my first band at 14 with Anthony Fox. We were covering metal songs with the occasional original thrown in.

Before I toured Europe I had a pretty heavy rehearsal schedule to get my voice ready for the shows. This included vocal exercises for about 45mins in the morning. Plus rehearsing the hour plus set 4 times a week. It payed off for me and I would do the same again for our touring schedule.

Has singing in a more traditional heavy metal style made it easier or harder for you to get recognised? Are people ever surprised when they hear you sing for the first time?

I think it’s more trendy to be doing Death Vocals in a metal band now or even symphonic vocals are more popular with female vocalists. But I’d prefer to stay true to what I like to sing and if I am getting compared to Geoff Tate or Bruce Dickinson then that makes me pretty damn happy.

We couldn’t help but notice the social media posts where you are often brandishing CDs that you are currently listening to at the time. With consumers now finding out that they don’t actually “own” some of the digital content they purchase, as seen recently when Sony removed access to over 1,000 Discovery videos, do you think the idea of music ownership will regain popularity, and we’ll start to see a resurgence of physical media? Or has that ship already sailed?

It’s hard to say, the younger generation are happy to download but I love a physical copy. Albums are a complete package with artwork, photos and lyrics. You don’t get that with streaming. We still sell cds and fans love them. I’d like to think they are here to stay.

We want to thank you for supporting us and agreeing to have a profile page on our website. Is there anything else we could do to make it better?

Thank you for all your support, it has been amazing and helps us get reach to new fans in other countries. If you have any contacts for festivals or venues please pass them on.

Thanks again for your time. Is there anything else you would like to add?

No, thank you !

We hope we can get you to a Temtris show to see what we are like live and meet up in person.

That would be cool.

Top 10 Metal Albums To Look Forward To In 2024

The year has only just begun, but we already know that there are plenty of upcoming releases to be excited about. While some of them are still shrouded in mystery, we have put together a short list of the albums we think you should be keeping an eye out for in the months ahead. Here is a quick rundown of the hottest new albums that 2024 has in store (in no particular order).

10. Elettra Storm – Powerlords

Fans of epic power metal should be in for an absolute treat when Elettra Storm’s debut album “Powerlords” arrives on February 16th 2024. Combining the glory of early 00’s era metal from Rhapsody of Fire and Stratovarius, with the more modernised styling of female-fronted bands like Frozen Crown and Unleash the Archers, the Italian outfit (spearheaded by SinHeresy co-founder Davide Sportiello and Crystal Emiliani on vocals) are definitely poised to make their indelible mark on the sub-genre. This much is clear if first single “Higher than the Stars” is any indication to go by. We can’t wait to hear more!

9. Dragonforce – Warp Speed Warriors

While we’re on the subject of epic power metal, it doesn’t get much more epic (or cheesy for that matter) than British power metal band Dragonforce. Having already released two great singles in “Power of the Triforce” and “Doomsday Party”, we pretty much know what to expect from this one. Alright let’s be honest, we knew even before hearing these two songs. And if you ask us, we couldn’t be happier! Heavy metal doesn’t always have to be serious after all. Our inner geek can’t help but be appreciative of the multiple pop culture references either. “Warp Speed Warriors” (featuring Alicia Vigil on bass and backing vocals) is set to drop on the 15th March 2024. See you at the party!

8. Exit Eden – Femmes Fatales

If we were to predict an album’s success based on star power alone, then sophomore album “Femme Fatales” by the multinational symphonic metal band Exit Eden would certainly be a sure-fire hit. The ensemble is an undeniable supergroup, consisting of Clémentine Delauney (Visions of Atlantis), Anna Brunner (League of Distortion) and Marina La Torraca (Phantom Elite). And while we’re a little saddened to hear that Amanda Somerville (Trillium, Avantasia) will not be returning on this album, the lineup is still plenty strong, and we fully understand her reasons for not being involved. Fans of the previous album will be happy to know that the band will still be covering international hit songs, but perhaps even more exciting is the addition of original compositions this time around, such as first single “Run!” featuring Marko Hietala (ex-Nightwish bassist/vocalist). Either way, we won’t have to wait long to find out as “Femme Fatales” is speeding towards us on 12th January 2024. Get ready!

7. Illumishade – Another Side of You

Illumishade have returned to brighten (or should that be darken?) our 2024 with their second album “Another Side of You”, which promises to be an even bigger event than their smash-hit debut album “ECLYPTIC: Wake of Shadows”. Featuring Mirjam Skal (synth/orchestrations) and the always brilliant Fabienne Erni (vocals/keyboards), the Swiss progressive metallers are preparing to deliver something very special on this record. In their own words, they are aiming for the music to “carry you to places unknown”. And judging by the two extraordinary singles released so far (“Enemy” and “Here We Are”), we think they might succeed. “Another Side of You” is due to drop on February 16th 2024, and we will definitely be showing up to listen to it – rain or shine!

6. Leaves’ Eyes – Myths of Fate

Fancy some symphonic viking metal this year? Then never fear because Leaves’ Eyes have got you covered. Their ninth studio album “Myths of Fate” will be raiding your speakers on the 22nd March 2024, and features the hit single “Forged By Fire” that was first premiered to a live audience at Wacken in 2023. The song tells the story of the legendary Tyrfing sword. Although the title could just as easily be applied to lead vocalist Elina Siirala, who faced a difficult trial when first joining the band due to the controversy surrounding the departure of Liv Kristine, but thankfully was undeterred and has emerged stronger than ever. And for that we raise our drinking horns and let out a hearty cheer!

5. Infected Rain – Time

Our excitement levels for this album have reached fever-pitch. Off the back of three spectacular singles, “Because I Let You Go”, “Dying Light”, “Never To Return”, which incidentally are the opening three tracks of new album “Time”, we are simply holding out for the rest of the album to drop now on the 9th February 2024. The album is the follow-up to the widely acclaimed and immensely popular “Ecdysis”, and witnesses the return of the ever-versatile frontwoman Lena Scissorhands (vocals), along with introducing the newest member Alice Lane (bass). We believe that Infected Rain have yet another winner on their hands, and with any luck “Time” should prove us right on that!

4. Amaranthe – The Catalyst

Speaking of time, who can believe that Swedish alternative modern metal band Amaranthe have been going for nigh on 15 years now? We suddenly feel very old. Thankfully they still sound just as energetic and youthful as ever. In fact, fans can pretty much expect to hear more of the same as Amaranthe have not varied the formula much in their career, and this is unlikely to change on their 7th album “The Catalyst” either. But that’s in no way a criticism (If it aint broke… etc). Elise Ryd is in incredible form on the most recent single, “Outer Dimensions”, hitting almost stratospheric high notes from the outset (as she is so famous for doing in her career). We cannot wait for this album to be a catalyst for helping us to achieve some of our New Year’s resolutions, because you can’t help but get fired up and motivated while listening to this band. Roll on February 23!

3. New Years Day – Half Black Heart

We were just speaking about the new year. How’s that for another segue? But on a serious note, it’s with great pleasure that we can add New Years Day to this list as the original line-up reunites to bring us “Half Black Heart” on 1st March 2024. As you can imagine, such an event “holds a deep significance” for lead vocalist Ash Costello and also promises to revive the signature sound that originally defined their music. Judging by the first single, “Secrets”, this certainly appears to be accurate. And for that we can all be grateful!

2. Alterium Debut Album

Last year we received the sad news that Italian power metal band Kalidia had disbanded. But it turns out that this might have been a good thing ultimately, because now we can celebrate the outstanding new power metal project by ex-Kalidia frontwoman Nicoletta Rosellini. While the new album has not yet officially been announced for this year, we think it’s a safe bet that we’ll hear something about it very shortly. In the meantime, we have two excellent singles to hold us over, with “Siren’s Call” and “Drag Me To Hell” proving that there is still plenty of reason for us to be cheeful!

1. New Nightwish Album

A new album by these symphonic metal titans is obviously a very big deal in the metal scene (though we’ll admit that our hype around this event has diminished over the years). We know very little at this stage, only that it is supposed to be coming – but even that is not set in stone. Yet we are still nervously excited about this one. Emphasis on the ‘nervously’. Most of us here have been longtime Nightwish fans, but their last effort “Human. :II: Nature” was a particular low point from our perspective (in what has been a gradual decline for several years). But we still hope and dream of the day that the band can recapture the magic and creativity of their earlier days. And this next album is another opportunity for them to display that. However, the early signs are admittedly troublesome. Marko Hietala (bass/vocals) will be sorely missed. And with only two original members remaining, the band has become almost unrecognisable now. The overbearing folksy influence of Troy Donockley on their sound hasn’t exactly helped matters either. Here’s hoping they can prove us wrong!

Dutch melodic metal band Pandora’s Key releases single and music video “Falls the Shadow”

Let Pandora’s Key guide you to a dark realm of melodic metal, where explosive and enchanting music weaves tales that echo long after the last note has faded. The band releases its second single “Falls the Shadow”, in preparation for the release of their first full-length album “Yet I Remain”.

“Falls the Shadow” is an explosion of sound and emotion. The track, inspired by T. S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Men” and the closing aria from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, draws its intensity from these lyrical classics. A new outlet for the age-old feeling of despair in the face of crises.

“Between the rise and the fall
Between the curtain and the call
Between the shroud and the pall
Falls the Shadow”

Pandora’s Key – Falls the Shadow

About Pandora’s Key and ‘Yet I Remain’:

Dark and intense, full of compelling melodies and catchy riffs. Pandora’s Key narrates mythical themes and links these to modern day issues. The band is ever searching for the beauty in the dark.

Melodic metal band Pandora’s Key was established in 2016 in the Dutch city of Breda, releasing the (inter)nationally well received debut EP “Prometheus Promise” one year later.

A period of growth and change followed, culminating at the start of the Covid era. Tackling the challenges presented by this period head-on, the band emerged more strongly connected than ever. The result of this is the debut album “Yet I Remain”, a celebration of musical liberty and passion. It is an album that explores the connections between seeming contradictions, between walls of sounds and quiet introspection, classical storytelling and primal emotions, violence and beauty. The result is an ambitious entry into melodic metal, threading the line between complexity and catchiness that demands the listener’s engagement. The album is set to be released on the 27th of January 2024, coinciding with a release show in home city Breda.

Pandora’s Key are:
Vera Veldhuizen – clean vocals
Rik van Schaaik – heavy vocals
Sebastiaan Pongers – lead guitar
Bram Luiken – rhythm guitar
Regine Lotstra – bass
Dimmy Marcelissen – drums
